Language Arts students have just finished their Show Not Tell Booklets, which have helped them to understand how to write more descriptively. I have provided a couple of sample personal narratives, which have given students an idea of how to structure their own personal narratives. L.A. 9-7 students were to hand in their personal narratives Monday, December 5. L.A. 9-3 students are to pass their papers in on Thursday, December 8. The penalty for late papers is 10% a day.

Currently, students are working on a group project, called My Shopping Cart. Students are working together to show how everyday products, that we use, come from other countries. This assignment is meant to show how interdependent we are with other countries from around the world.

Homework for Thursday.

Students are to have completed the block 2 reading and have added more character traits to their charts. As well, students are to make another connection to what they have read in block two. 3 questions from the booklet must also be answered. The summary of block 2 is also due for Friday. Most students should have completed much of this work in class on Thursday. If any student has fallen behind in the reading, they must sign out one of the red versions of the novel and then catch up on the reading at home.
I would also suggest that all students review their summaries each night, so that the events from each block remain fresh in their minds.

Students in Social Studies have now been exposed to lessons on Interdependence and our connections to countries around the world. We are currently wrapping up a lesson on mapping, where students are exposed to 3 different maps: The Mercator Projection, the Peter's Projection, and MacArthur's Universal Corrective Map of the World. Students are expected to know the characteristics of these maps and the differences between them.
We will also be covering material on the provincial election over the next couple of weeks. Students are expected to know the 3 levels of government, what the elected officials are called, the number of MLA's in PEI, the main political parties, as well as number of political terms that will be handed out to students over the next week. Students will be educated about the political party platforms and then participate in a student vote on the day of the provincial election.

Students are wrapping up the first block of their novel study, Forbidden City. This novel is written as a travel journal and has been divided into blocks rather than chapters. Block one ends on page 36. Students are expected to complete their Character Trait Charts for each main character. Also, students are to fill in the Connections to Text handout. Once completed of these activities, students are to answer any 5 questions from their booklet on the block one reading. After reading each block students are to write a 1/2 page to full page summary of the blocks events. This is to go in the novel studies scribbler. Please encourage you son or daughter to discuss the events of Forbidden City.

We are well into the swing of things in Language Arts. Students have already been introduced to presentations, reading comprehension activities, vocabulary lessons, and now we are presently working on a novel study called Forbidden City. Students are expected to come to class organized and prepared. I ask that all L.A. students have four scribblers: Novel Studies, Vocabulary, Notes, and Something to Think About. It may be best for these students to have an L.A. binder, in which they can place their four scribblers.
When students do not have any written homework, they still have homework. My expectation is that each student spends a minimum of 15 minutes reviewing their notes each night. It is my belief that, if this is done, it would be difficult for any student to feel unprepared or overwhelmed with the material we cover this year. I hope that all parents will encourage their son or daughter to read each night and review their work from class. We are now in the process of finishing up our Global Issues notes. Students will be having a quiz based on this information. Please encourage your son or daughter to review their notes in advance for the quiz. I will be discussing with each class tomorrow the date of their quiz. Also, we are now moving into the last few weeks of our school year. Each year in Social Studies I have my students do a Political Song assignment. We discuss which songs possibly qualify as having a political theme. I provide a couple of examples and then I let the students do a little computer lab research, looking for a song that interests them. Each student will then play the song for the class (which I can do for them over youtube), displaying the lyrics (on a word document) and then explaining what this songs means. All students will be provided with a rubric to indicate the areas that they will be graded.

We are now in the homestretch. This term students have completed the Expository Essay, the Persuasive Essay and they are now in the process of wrapping up their Research Reports. Each of these assignments will help them this fall when they enter into Three Oaks. Please encourage your son or daughter to review their notes and the examples of how to properly cite their sources in their papers. The Research Report is due June 14. The following week we will be working on a poetry unit to wrap up our school year.

All social studies students are now working on an assignment where they have the opportunity to learn about a social studies topic of their choice. Students are working in groups of 5. There is a group leader in each group to keep students on task. Students are expected to put research time into their assignment at home as well as in school. The students will be presenting their topic to the class on Wednesday, March 9. All students have received two rubrics which explains how they will be graded on this assignment. Please ensure that your son or daughter is working diligently on their portion of this assignment.

We are currently reviewing the electoral process and how municipal elections operate. We have reviewed the 3 levels of government and the respresentatives at each level and the responsibilites of the these levels of government. This week we are holding elections within the school to choose our Junior Mayor and Council. The election will take place on Thursday, February 10.

We are presently starting a novel study, To See You Again, which I read to the class. This novel has been a highlight each year for students. It tells the true story of a young Jewish girl, whose family attempts to flee the persecution of the Nazi's and how they eventually get caught up in the horrific events of the holocaust. I encourage the students to carefully listen to the story over the coming weeks. After every two chapters students will need to write a summary.

Today we went through the rest of our Show Not Tell booklet, which provided a sample personal narrative as well as guided instruction of how to structure a personal narrative. Students can also refer to the final page of the handout which provides the expectations of what is to be included in their good copy. Students should have already come up with at least 3 possibilities for their personal narrative. We will be in the computer lab for the next 3 classes working hard on creating our personal narrative. It may be in the best interests of students to print off a copy of what they complete each class, so that they may also work on it at home.

We are currently working on personal narratives. Students have received a handout with examples and exercises that deal with descriptive language. The is also a sample personal narrative with guidelines as to how a personal narrative should be structured. Students were responsible for handing in a small personal narrative that explained a time when they felt unprepared for a test or assignment. I have received most of these today. Any students who were unprepared to submit this assignment will have much food for thought for their writing. I would like all assignments in tomorrow.

Currently, we have started our first novel study, Forbidden City. This novel is a historical fiction, which portrays fictional characters who experience the horror of the Tian An Men Square Massacre. Please encourage your son or daughter to discuss what they are learning throughout this novel study. This novel is divided into blocks rather than chapters, since it has been written as a travel journal. At the end of each block, students are responsible for writing a full one page summary (single spaced) and then answering the questions from their booklet in their novel studies scribbler. Most students are now nearing the end of the block and should be soon working on their summary. The summary and questions will be due on Tuesday, September 21. Welcome back students and parents. We have now shaken off the cobwebs and are moving through our curriculum. Our first theme that we cover in grade 9 social studies is Interdependence. Over the past week, we have reacquainted ourselves with our local geography and that of the developed nations as well as the developing nations. We have reviewed a slide show, which indicated Interdependence between the developing country of Kenya and Prince Edward Island. Through the efforts of Farmers Helping Farmers, we have many wonderful photos and information that allows us to examine our differences as well as our similarities with developing countries and how we have grown to have interdependent relationships with these nations. Students will be examining their own understanding of Interdependence and coming to class with examples.
In our next lesson we will be focusing on examing our world view from a mapping perspective. Students will come to realize that the traditional way in which the world map is portrayed is not accurate and that it is important to consider perspective in examing facts and ideas related to world issues. Students will be examing the Mercator and Peters Projections as well as the McArthur's Universal Corrective Map of the World.
Throughout the entire school year we will be discussing current events. Each class I will be asking students to tell me what is going on in the world today. I expect students to be following current events through on-line sources such as CBC.Ca, Yahoo News, CNN, etc. Students may also watch the National, Compass, or other news agencies. Please encourage your son or daughter to share their understanding of current events with you.

We are nearing the end of the novel To See You Again. Students will be responsible for handing in their novel studies scribblers following their novel studies test. The test on the novel will be at the beginning of next week. I will look at the class schedules and then inform students which day and class period their test will fall on. Please have students review their summaries to help prepare them for the test. Following the novel study, I will be teaching the students the basics of essay writing. This is a very important part of our curriculum in which the students will need to pay close attention. Following the notes and examples on the essay, the students will be given topics to choose from, in which to write their essay. Please encourage your child to review their notes and carefully construct their essay to the best of their ability.

This past week we started with discussions of the Federal Election. We have discussed what a democracy is and how democracies around the world my differ. We are now in the process of discussing how our electoral process works, with specific emphasis on our local representatives and the political parties that they represent. Elections Canada has sent our class a package that will allow students to participate in a mock vote. Please encourage your child to follow the news of the party platforms during the next 2 weeks.
